I waited so long for this movie to come out in theaters! I read the book Me Before You by Jojo Moyes over a year ago and I absolutely loved it. The movie followed the storyline of the novel exactly with some details left out. I think it’s inconsequential to debate if the movie was 100% true to the novel, rather I think it’s better to view the movie as its own work of art. I’ll try not to spoil too much in this review!
Emilia Clarke plays Louisa Clark, a 26 year old caretaker for Will Traynor, a young quadriplegic (played by Sam Claflin.) Their chemistry was amazing. It was exactly the way I envisioned Louisa Clark and Will Traynor in the book. Before watching the movie, I was wondering how they would pull of such heavy, emotion filled story line with very little action. I think the production did a great job with the character development and highlighting Louisa’s quirkiness and the cute romantic bantering between the two. Emilia Clarke’s acting was incredible and you can’t even remember she also plays Khaleesi, Mother of Dragons in Game of Thrones, who is nothing like Louisa.
Also, Louisa’s wardrobe is so much fun! She adores what most people would deem ugly. I totally find ugly things cute too!
While it may seem like a cheesy romance movie, where Louisa falls in love with Will, but that is not the case at all. Both characters have a lot at stake and it touches on a very touchy subject of suicides. While the plot may seem like a romance, I found it very eye opening to watch Louisa begin to really live for herself and expand her worldview of life. My boyfriend thought the whole thing was dramatic and unrealistic but that is pretty much true for all variations of romance films. While keeping that in the back of my mind, I think there’s a lot of value in the explorations of the emotional depth of their relationship and what it means to love someone unconditionally.
Overall, this movie is a beautiful love story. If you read the book and watched the movie, let me know what you think! If you’re planning on watching it, let me know as well!
